The archaeological park of Ancient Kaulon, located in the Monasterace Marina near the Punta Stilo promontory, is one of the most significant testimonies of the old Magna-Graecia settlement. The colony’s foundation dates back to the end of the 7th century BC, at the time of the Trojan War when, according to legend, Kaulon, son of the Amazon Clete, rebuilt the polis following its destruction by the Achaeans, with the aid of the Crotone peoples. The ancient city stretched between the border of the territory of Crotone and that of Locri, near the beach of today’s Monasterace Marina. Thanks to the excavation initiatives that followed, where the operation of the famed archaeologist Paolo Orsi proved fundamental, the various phases of the settlement were identified. Amongst the old abodes, organised by lots and generally structured into 3 housing units, stands the famous “Casa del Drago”, which takes its name from the polychrome mosaic decoration that was placed on the floor at the entrance of the dining room, currently safeguarded in the adjacent archaeological museum. Also of notable importance are the remains of the Doric Temple, which date back to the 5th century BC, of which only the base remains. Along its perimeter, the building had 36 columns, which were partially reconstructed by Paolo Orsi. Visiting the park can be integrated and deepened with a stop at the “Antica Kaulon” Archaeological Museum, where rare underwater finds are also preserved, comprising the elevated parts of an Ionic temple. These findings were part of the ancient shoreline of the Greek city and are characterised by being unusual both in terms of their size and for their state of conservation.
