The Cascata del Marmarico – in the Calabrian dialect being the “Cascata du Marmarico” (meaning slow and heavy falls) – stands at a height of 114 metres. These falls are known to be the highest in the entire Southern Apennines, being located near the ancient town of Bivongi, in the upper stretch of the Stilaro river. There are two ways to get to the waterfalls: in an off-road vehicle, or on foot across a challenging yet rewarding trekking route. Throughout the itinerary in the wooded valley, hikers are immersed in unspoilt nature, characterised by the scents of the lush wild plants and the relaxing melody deriving from the water flowing amongst the rocks. Travelling in an off-road vehicle, a dirt track leads you to a small concrete bridge, from where the waterfall is only another 20 minutes’ walk. For trekkers, the journey rather lasts two hours or so, depending on the pace, culminating with the coveted naturalistic jewel: the fresh waters of the Marmarico cascading into a small body of water, in which you can delight in a regenerating and refreshing swim. The ideal seasons to visit the waterfalls are spring and autumn, when the climate is milder and the vibrant colours of nature adorn the path. Summer is a good time, even though the river is dry.
