Near Guardavalle, a small village located on the Catanzaro coast of the Ionian Sea, you can explore the high-up Valle dell’Assi by trekking to the clearest waterfalls in all of Calabria, those of Pietracupa.
Whatever your level of experience, it is best to entrust an expert guide to accompany you along the path, as the routes are not always signposted. With a medium level of difficulty, it normally takes around 2-3 hours to travel along the entire stretch.
Gather your poles, hiking shoes, comfortable clothing and set off!
We suggest starting from what was once the Rifugio Zessi, near Bivongi. From here, you soon reach an area subject to slippages, before descending towards the river bed. Around you are the ravines of the eroded clayey rocks that characterise this landscape almost entirely free from any riparian vegetation. Once you have passed the small river gorges, you will be immersed in the silence of a holm oak forest. Passing through, you can hear the gentle downward rush of cascading water.
And here before you are the Cascate di Pietracupa. The flow of the stream caresses the white stones, falling ten metres to form the natural basin below. In the warmer months, you can dive into these cool waters, whilst during the other periods you will have to settle for an unparalleled pristine natural landscape.
