The Regional Park of Serre Calabresi is a vast protected natural area extending between the Aspromonte and the Isthmus of Marcellinara, between the provinces of Catanzaro, Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valentia, across a surface area of 17,687 hectares.
The toponym ‘Serre’ is of dubious etymology – according to some, it derives from the peculiar alignment of the mountains and hills that recall the teeth of a saw, yet others claim it is due to the presence of numerous sawmills in ancient times.
Dotted with imposing trees that stand out against the sky, the Park is characterised by
majestic and spectacular landscapes, in which you can distinguish extensive mountain ranges, flourishing woods, waterfalls and a rich biodiversity.
To the east is the Stilo wood, home to the Stilaro Valley, where the torrents rush impetuously into the waterfalls, like those of Marmarico, the tallest and most fascinating throughout all of Calabria. Amongst white firs, oaks and chestnut trees, you can come across the peculiar fauna populating the Park, such as the mouflons, fallow deer, roe deer, but also peacocks, pheasants, the rare black woodpecker and many others.
To be admired alongside the natural splendours are the places of worship of great historical and religious importance, such as the Certosa di Serra San Bruno abbey, the Santuario Regionale di Santa Maria del Bosco or the archaeological remnants that attest to the role of the ancient Bourbon foundries.
A varied and rich offering of itineraries adapts to the needs of beginners and to the more experienced trekkers, able to decide whether to favour the nature trails or cultural walks.
One thing is certain – whatever the path, the authentic spectacle of nature is assured.
