The seabed of the Ionian Sea, in addition to being home to an immense natural heritage, preserve precious treasures that testify to the significant role that these lands once played, able to offer diving enthusiasts unique and stunning experiences. During the Second World War, these waters played a fundamental role for the naval convoys that supplied food, weapons and ammunition to the Italian-German troops, engaged in combat with the Allies in North Africa. The British army chose to obstruct the passageway and, with the use of submarine torpedoes, sank numerous vessels of the Axis. Today, scattered about the sandy seabed are the fascinating shipwrecks of these vessels, to be admired as they coexist harmoniously with the rich marine biodiversity. Amongst these is the Cosala off the coast of Badolato Marina, an imposing hull of Italian origin, which can still be observed in its entirety. Also of particular interest is the Relitto Capitan Antonio, an old merchant ship close to the Santa Caterina dello Ionio, lying 12 metres deep and the Kingdom, torpedoed during the Second World War. Another thrilling dive into the past can be undertaken in the archaeological site of the submerged Kaulon, which preserves some ancient remnants dating back to the time of the Magna-Graecia settlement. Amongst these are innumerable architectural components and a temple under construction, which can be admired by the most experienced scuba divers in possession of a license, but also by snorkelers who can explore the wreckage from the surface, thanks to the shallow depth of the area. Other precious remnants in the Ionian waters, near Riace Marina, are the famous statues of the Riace Bronzes that were found in August 1972, being one of the greatest testimonies of Greek sculptural art and now safeguarded in the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia in Reggio Calabria.
