The Medieval Castle of Stilo, also known as the Castello Normanno, arises on the summit of Monte Consolino to dominate the entire Stilaro valley. It was built in the 11th century by Roger II of Sicily, intent on establishing greater control over the rebellious village that did not accept the domination of the Vikings, which begun in 1072. The fortress originally bore a square layout adorned with triangular and circular towers. These latter circumscribed the stronghold, endowed with embrasures, from which makeshift defences were launched, such as stones or hot oil. The roofs, thanks to a system of earthenware pipes, gathered rainwater that was then stored in a cistern. Still standing in the central part are some supporting walls of the old chapel, which held one dominant altar and four secondary ones. The Castle was surrounded by several walls and watchtowers to ensure perennial impregnability and protection against enemy raids. Over the centuries, the fortress has been remodelled several times before it was ultimately destroyed in the devastating earthquake that struck many towns throughout Calabria in 1783. Today, the ruins delineate certain environments, whilst part of the perimetral walls, the circular towers and the entrance are also visible, leaving room for visitors’ imagination. From the fortress, you can also enjoy a magical view of the valley and the waters of the Ionian Sea.
