Between the Fosso di Cupido and the Torrente di Alaca, in the village of Sant’Andrea Apostolo dello Ionio Marina, extends a 4-kilometre stretch of land that has remained untouched by human contamination. Here, the sounds, perfumes and colours are those of a wild nature, characterised by the presence of spontaneous vegetation and wild fauna.
The white granite sand reflects the rays of the brilliant sun of Calabria, whilst the sea is so crystalline that you can admire the deep even at many metres in depth.
It is the ideal habitat for protected fauna specimens, along with being a coveted place for the “Caretta Caretta” sea turtle species to nest. Commonly known as the Loggerhead Sea Turtle, it is the most common in the Mediterranean Sea and unfortunately today on the verge of extinction. Driven by an innate instinct, the “Caretta Caretta” female leaves its natural element to lay its eggs on the same beach where it was born. Multiple associations in the area monitor and protect the hatchlings during the magical and exciting moment in which these tiny turtles come to light and instinctively head towards the sea.
Growing in the soft white sand is a rare flower with a sweet and delicate scent, called the Giglio Marino or Pancrazio. Linked to Greek mythology and the goddess Hera, it represents candour and purity, prerogatives that can also be traced back to this wonderful location.
