The story of the Cooperativa Nido di Seta is “a story of love for a land, focused on its origins”. This is how Miriam Leone, one of the three young founders, defines this innovative project. Their goal was to set out from their native land and restore the ancient gelsibachicoltura chain – consisting in cultivating mulberry trees and breeding silkworms – that has rendered San Floro and the Catanzaro people, numbering between 700 and 800, the most important silk production centre in Europe. The Cooperativa operates a few kilometres from the village, in a ‘gelseto’ of about 3,000 plants, whose leaves are the basic foodstuff of the silkworm. This small larva, after having fed excessively, transforms four times, after which it wraps itself inside the silk cocoon. From this point, through a fascinating process, the most precious thread in the world is extracted.
This prized raw material is used for textile production, such as the creation of shawls, and in the making of artisanal jewellery, created by combining silk and ceramics. In addition, within the village, in the picturesque setting of the Caracciolo castle, a Silk Museum has been founded, in which you can admire period costumes, damask vestments, artefacts in raw silk and the ancient and more contemporary frames.
The founders of the Cooperativa Nido di Seta, however, are not the only enterprising youths in San Floro – Stefano Caccavari, in addition to being the promoter of the project L’Orto di Famiglia, is also the creator of the Mulinum start-up, which aims to restore the authenticity of ancient grains, through the use of organic raw materials and a natural stone mill. The result is a finished product of the utmost quality, which has the flavour of “nonna’s bread”, having been uncontaminated by chemical fertilisers. The Mulinum houses within 50 places for delicious authentic tastings – not to be missed is the pizza topped with organic vegetables from L’Orto di Famiglia!
